G16 locomotives

witnessed some significant milestones in Hong Kong’s railway history

Introduced to Hong Kong in 1961, the EMD G16 locomotives had served the city for 60 long years before retiring in 2021 following the launch of a new signalling system on the East Rail Line. Through the years, the G16 locomotives had witnessed some significant milestones in Hong Kong’s railway history, from the decommissioning of all steam locomotives to the full electrification of the East Rail Line and the merger of MTR and KCR.

1:87 G16 Locomotive – No. 59 (Passenger Loco Green)

G16 Locomotive No. 59 was imported to Hong Kong in the 1960s to replace KCR’s steam locomotives. The locomotive began service by pulling green passenger trains.

1:87 G16 Locomotive – No. 58 (Engineering Grey)

In 1983, the locomotives were withdrawn from passenger service and switched to hauling freight. The repurposed locomotives were painted silver grey.

1:87 G16 Locomotive – No. 56 (Corporate Red and Blue)

In the late 1990s, the locomotives were repainted again, this time in the corporate colour of red and blue, which remained even after the MTR-KCR merger. In February 2021, all G16 locomotives were decommissioned. Number 56, which has been refurbished and restored, is now on display at the “Station Rail Voyage” exhibition in Hung Hom Station.

56 Diesel Electric Locomotive Commemorative Magnet

The magnet is designed to look just like the name plate of the locomotive number 56 has been created, adopting the same red background colour and yellow font.
